Feeling STRESSED?
It's no wonder!
Statistics from a recent global stress research study show that
increased stress is felt worldwide, and stress affects women differently
than men:
A recent Roper Starch Worldwide survey of 30,000 people between
the ages of 13 and 65 in 30 countries showed:
- Women who work full-time and have children under the age of
13 report the greatest stress worldwide.
- Nearly one in four mothers who work full-time
and have children under 13 feel stress almost every day.
- Globally, 23% of women executives and professionals, and 19%
of their male peers, say they feel "super-stressed."
During stress, women's bodies actually secrete chemicals, such
as oxytocin, that are believed to promote their care for
children and their seeking of support from their female friends
(see
pdf at www.4woman.gov).
It's no secret that excessive levels of stress can contribute
to health problems. The extent to which your health can be affected
will be the topic addressed at our June 21st meeting by Dr. Radhika
Mohandas. BUT, did you know that there is actually an American
Institute of Stress (www.stress.org) or that the U.S.
government has recognized that women handle stress in a unique way?
While stress is a fact of life, we do have the ability to manage
our stress levels so that they don't adversely control our health. "I
literally smile in my sleep," says
author Natasha
Munson who has followed her own ten tips for removing
stress in life. "As
women, we tend to take responsibility for a lot more and neglect
our needs in the process." Natasha's article, 10
Ways to Remove Stress From Your Life, can be viewed
in full at www.bluesuitmom.com.
Among her tips:
Speak and honor your truth. Know
when and how to say "No."
Stop feeling obligated. You can
choose whom you give your time and energy to.
Use your faith. Everyday, read a
bible verse or an inspirational message to keep your spirit
replenished.
Get disciplined. Discipline
will help us have control over our life and our decisions.
Make a commitment. People should
be able to see the God in you and want to know more about your
joy and
your life.
This too shall pass. No matter what
you are dealing with in life, there is a simple truth
that will prevail
- this too shall pass.
No woe-is-me parties and no excuses. You
must do everything you can to keep your life progressing in
a positive way.
Create a life plan. This simple
act will help you when obstacles and opportunities present
themselves.
Take and make time for yourself. Enough
said.
Love your life. Everyone and everything
in your life should be a reflection of the joy that is in your
life.

SVBWN was"Reelin' in
the Business" at the Chamber's Community Expo in May
Thanks to our terrific Special Event Directors, Karla
Odell and Paula Hendricks-Prieur, SVBWN had
its most eye-"catching" booth ever at this year's Community
Expo, sponsored by the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Nearly 20 SVBWN members volunteered to "woman" this
year's booth which centered around taking Polaroid photos of booth visitors
making "the big catch." A big bonus was the drawing for an
SVBWN gift basket -- filled with generous donations from many of our
members and their businesses. |

SVBWN members conduct interviews at Alisal High workshop
Several SVBWN members (pictured below) generously
donated their time by conducting interviews at Alisal High Schools' interview
workshops
this spring. Network members interviewed the Advanced Placement
students,
including
the
Senior Class President and the Valedictorian. After the event, SVBWN
2005 President Brigid McGrath Massie was quoted as saying, "There is
truly help for the
future."
